The Pavilion as a “type” in many ways would be considered the ideal form in Bengal. Its transparency, its play with light and air and water, the blurring of the “Edges” holds all that is “Essential” reflects all that is true.
The design approach for this residence was to explore the dissolving of the “wall” the “looking at” from the “inside” to the “outside”. The approach towards form has been totally reversed: the way the inside will be inhabited determined the wall, the openings, the facing of the form etc. The spaces inside are just to be in to look out at. The continuous dialogue with nature, water, sky, reach deep into our anthropological roots and origin.

As one enters the compound, one is greeted by the refreshing sound of water, a cascade of water with light - an abstraction of “DEEP”. As one enters the pavilion outside is brought inside along with them. One is flanked with exterior on the interior courtyard flooded with light from the top. As one moves from “room” to “room”, place to place one is continuously in dialogue with the exterior, the “Edge” is continuously blurred. The living spaces dissolve one into the other to create a continuous whole and unity of openness, the pavilion reconstructed.
Finally, all the spaces gradually spiral up from the exterior garden to the interior courtyard to the roof terrace garden, as if the garden travels with you from the ground in a spiral to the top keeping you in continuous correspondence with nature.

The Pavilion” is designed as a fusion of regional tradition with contemporary living. The flexible and pluralistic language of the contemporary has been used to create unity in form and space of an otherwise traditional, conventional and demanding program, where a separate unit for the client’s parents and mother in law were needed besides a five-bedroom unit for themselves with separate entries.
The project is a conscious commitment towards the creation of a unique response to program, place climate and technology into a creative form that is inherently in touch with social and cultural realties and values, not based upon conventional sequences of domestic design.

The natural sand stone cladding creates a spontaneous dialogue with its surrounding landscaping and contributes to its desired informality.
In it’s planning, the main unit has a central atrium like space, which serves as a covered courtyard. Changing levels of light from a skylight throughout the day animates the entire house, as all the living spaces revolve around this slate clad atrium. An antique wooden doorway washed with light creates a feature wall for the area.

As one enters the compound the visitor is greeted by a landscaped garden and the refreshing sound of water. A cascade of water has been created in a dialectic relationship with light (an abstraction of “chinni-kanas”)
